Dr. Funkenstein,
While it is quite clear that you have much disdain for most "Fusion" music and a love for
Sam Rivers, Parlaiment/Funkadelic,
CAN, Hasil Atkins, Guitar Wolf, the Monks, et al, might I suggest a less heavy handed approach and try and win the hearts and minds by posting some of this music for people check out.

I was going to respond fervently(to original), but for some reason I remembered an old t-shirt or button that went something like this: "I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person..."

I still wanna hear some of Dr Funks material. Either soloing or preferrably with a band/project. I think that would speak volumes about where his head is regarding musical style and it's appreciation/interpretation. The guy is obviously smart, knows alot about music in general and specifically. But he leaves out alot and generalizes way too much about a topic that is way too specific.
Besides.... like I said. Ultimatly it's art. I'm sure there's people that flock for Yoko Ono's version of Joe's Garage.

http://homepage.mac.com/matthughen/ If you go to my projects folder you can find a few tracks. 2 of them are recordings that Iam currently collaberating on as a producer. Its 4 track stuff. The other is from a project that I am working on that is my first ?solo? thing. Its electronic kybd stuff . . . I am used to collaborating more than individual efforts. I am looking for some stuff I have played drums on. Gotta get with my old guitarist.

sounds pretty good..

a quote from the vin-man himself
"My favourite record is this one record called secrets by Allan Holdsworth. Its not because of how complicated the music is because i honestly dont care how simple or complicated something is. I just think that what this record represents musically is amazing"

HI, i am new member here and i would like to talk about this very intersting topic. I apologize in advance for my english since i am a student in Spain.
Since we have not so much fusion here like in America, i hear things from mr. Holdworth i say it is incredible!
however, I think since reading this board many times in the last few days. many drummers here only into Vinnie and weckle and it seems to be that original poster means he is tired of hearing this. It seems like everyone who sounds like Vinnie or weckle is good and the rest not good?? I feel so strange by this because we look to america and say...wow so many great players...yet all I see here is vinie this or weckle this and now steve hass that etc etc...even one guy want to by drums of steve hass? Why dont he just marry with him? They can be tohgether always. I here Steve hass he sounds many like vinnie and weckle. This to me is strange. gary Husband is a very great Drummer! Also Mr covington and many others not mantioned on this board. They dont sound like weckle or vinnie! they sound like themselves! To me it seems like this was the first anger of the original poster. Always the same Vinnie bla and weckle bla.
I hope to enjoy many stories here and good holidays to all.

I went to a recent Chad Wackerman clinic performance with Allan Holdsworth and Jimmy Johnson. I went with a guitar player friend who wanted to get there early enough to be able to sit near Allan. As impressive a player as Chad is I found myself mesmerised and riveted to Allan's playing. He has such an atypical approach to the guitar that to me is still as refreshing now as it was when I first heard him in the 70's. IMO having watched him play I would say he's one of the most unselfish musicians I've ever seen, TOTALLY involved in what the other members of the ensemble have to say musically. This is a guy with very big ears. The spontaneous composing (aka "improvisation") these three did was amazing. I witnessed that musical conversation that is much talked about but rarely achieved. The only ego at work here was of the synergistic collective kind.

what was that quote from john maclaughlin where he went backstage and said to Allan "if i knew what you were doing i'd steal it"
i always think his surname is perfect Allan Holds Worth.
..i really got a buzz reading the "replies" ..it's good to know the Allan Holdsworth fans are mob handed in here.
